They say April Showers bring May Flowers...but what to May Showers bring?

Ah, yes, the sneak peak of summer has passed and the rain has returned.

And I'm not sure what you like to do on a rainy day, but I love to bake.

And what other than Nanaimo Bars would I suggest?

So try out this easy and tasty recipe on a rainy day and enjoy them after supper or with a nice cup of tea.

Nanaimo Bar Recipe

Bottom Layer
½ cup unsalted butter (European style cultured)
¼ cup sugar
5 tbsp. cocoa
1 egg beaten
1 ¼ cups graham wafer crumbs
½ c. finely chopped almonds
1 cup coconut

Melt first 3 ingredients in top of double boiler. Add egg and stir to cook and thicken. Remove from heat. Stir in crumbs, coconut, and nuts. Press firmly into an ungreased 8" x 8" pan.

Second Layer
½ cup unsalted butter
2 Tbsp. and 2 Tsp. cream
2 Tbsp. vanilla custard powder
2 cups icing sugar

Cream butter, cream, custard powder, and icing sugar together well. Beat until light. Spread over bottom layer.

Third Layer
4 squares semi-sweet chocolate (1 oz. each)
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

Melt chocolate and butter overlow heat. Cool. Once cool, but still liquid, pour over second layer and chill in refrigerator.

Under New Ownership

On March 8th, 2011, Travelodge Nanaimo was purchased by Bob and Sue Se. Bob and Sue are from the BC Mainland and have wanted to be on Vancouver Island for some time and when they came across the Travelodge Nanaimo property they fell in love. Bob and Sue Se have owned and operated many properties in the past and are not newcomers to the hospitality industry.

Bob and Sue have chosen to keep all the same smiling faces that our regular guests have come to know. They have also made plans for to upgrade the existing property over the next few years. Bob and Sue have already been and will continue to be a great addition to the Travelodge Nanaimo family.

We the staff and management look forward to many years with the Se Family.

Fantastic Review for Travelodge Nanaimo!!

We recently recived a fantastic review and just had to share it!

WOW Customer Service!

I travel a fair bit normally for business, however this trip was all leisure! We drove off the last ferry at like 12:30am and had no reservations booked. we had planned to stay one night in Nanaimo, then travel to Victoria, Tofino, and Campbell River. We had been to Nanaimo before but never stayed at the Travelodge. It was late and we just wanted to sleep. The lady at the desk was very helpful and gave a us a pretty good rate. The room was clean and they had free internet. When we got up the next morning we noticed they had a great breakfast which was included in the room price. The front desk people were super helpful and we decided to stay for the week and just do day trips around the island. I have to say they were clean. comfortable, and very helpful. we will stay again! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for your review! We appreciate it so much!

Rave Review for Travelodge Nanaimo!

posted by: Travelodge Nanaimo on April 13, 2010 8:22:21 AM
Yesterday we received this letter from a guest, had to share it!

"My wife and I were on our way to the Olympics via Horseshoe Bay Ferry, and much to our surprise the long term parking was over full. We then asked the attendant at B.C. Ferries where do we park we are heading to Whistler for four days? He replied try the beachfront hotel down the street, there is a 24 h long term lot there.

We were running out of time. So we went to the lot and it only took loonies, no c/c payment option, so i asked the clerk at the hotel next to the lot if he had change or if i could rent a stall at the motel? His reply was let me call the owner. The answer was NO. (The motel only had one car in it at the time.) By this time, we were worries we had prepaid a shuttle bus on the other side of Lions Bay to take us up to Whistler. It was 12:30pm departure, no time to miss the ferry.

So we drove down the street to (a Nanaimo gas station) I got $40 in loonies from them and life was good. Then my wife noticed the Travelodge...Thank God!

Kevin (the Front Desk Clerk) saved the day, rented us a stall at your hotel, and not only that called us a taxi, while I paid and registered my wife unloaded the car. The taxi arrived, we got on the 9:00am ferry and Kevin saved our vacation. You are very fortunate to have such an employee, I wish the world were full of Kevins, we would be better off. Life was good earlier, but life was GRAND now. "

What can I say, a Travelodge Nanaimo employee saves the day, and prevents Olympic disaster!

From the Ladies in Texas

posted by: Travelodge Nanaimo on December 14, 2009 11:10:35 AM
We received a card this morning that I had to blog about- it was a Thank You Card from three of the sweetest sisters in Texas! Lou-Ray, Billye and Martha visited us in November and had these kind words to say about our staff and their stay-

"Sorry to be so long saying Thank You for our wonderful memories of a delightful trip and how you are a special memory because you were so nice and fun to be with. And you can believe it because I've never written to any hotel before this trip- But you were special- so save us a room in case we get back some year. We are those three grey-headed sisters, all over 85 years old from Texas. Thank you again for just being so fun to deal with!"

Thank you ladies, we enjoyed having you as much as you enjoyed being here! We look forward to your next visit, hopefully soon.
